I have taught a variety of subjects including Current issues in Korea, Introduction to Korean culture, Teaching Practicum in Korean as well as all levels of upper and lower division Korean languages.

One thing I highlight in my class is critical language analysis. Conversation is the way in which people socialize, interact, develop, and sustain their relationship with each other. When people converse, there is much more going on than just a linguistic code. For this reason, I believe that it is important to go beyond the teaching of grammatical forms and to teach students how conversation works in the real world by having them reflect on their language use, analyze existing language sample, and incorporate the linguistic forms in actual conversations. To achieve this goal, I implement authentic materials, usually naturally occurring conversation data that I have gathered and filmed in Korea. The authentic data includes various conversational functions such as getting acquainted, invitation and refusal, invitation and acceptance, compliments, agreement and disagreement as well as cultural scenes such as how to order food in a restaurant, how to take a public transportation, etc. Some of the videos were filmed with 360 VR videos, with which students could feel like they are conversing with a native speaker in a typical café in Seoul. These authentic materials have now been incorporated into the Korean language curriculum to complement existing teaching materials to better reflect the goal of language use in interaction. Another approach to teaching is the integration of project-based learning. I believe students can be deeply engaged and motivated in their learning when working on meaningful projects. Thus, my class is designed with various projects from introductory to advanced levels. Some of the classroom examples are listed on the right column of this page.
